What would raise it most
- You look in good shape. Check all your reports once a year for errors.
This is an estimate built from the factors all agencies weigh most. It is not your official score. Each agency uses its own private scale, so get your free reports for the real figures.

The rules differ by country. Your steps should too.
Credit repair questions, country by country
Which agencies hold my file?
Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Lenders may check any of them, so check all three. Your statutory report from each is free.
How long do missed payments and defaults stay?
Six years from the date of the default or missed payment, even after you pay it off. CCJs also drop off after six years, or are removed if paid in full within one month.
Does being on the electoral roll help?
Yes. Lenders use it to confirm your address. Registering at your current address is one of the quickest free improvements.
Can I remove a link to an ex-partner?
If you no longer share finances, ask each agency for a notice of disassociation so their file stops affecting yours.
Where do I complain if a lender will not fix an error?
Complain to the lender first. If you are unhappy after eight weeks, go to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free.
General information, checked against official sources in September 2026. Rules can change, so confirm with the agency or regulator.
Build good credit and make cards work for you
Better credit means cheaper mortgages, loans and phone deals. That can save you thousands.
Build history from scratch in UK
- Register on the electoral roll at your current address. It is free and lenders check it first.
- Put one household bill or your phone contract in your name, and pay it by Direct Debit.
- No history yet? A credit builder card, or a credit builder loan from a credit union, builds a record in months.
- Some free apps let you add rent and council tax payments to your Experian file.
- Check all three files (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) every few months, and fix mistakes straight away.
Avoid these
Several applications in a short time. Only paying the minimum. Taking cash out on a card. Closing your oldest account.
General guidance, not financial advice. Only borrow what you can repay in full.
Tax credits, refunds and debt: common questions
The tax questions people ask most when money is tight. Missing yours? Use Search and tell us.
How do I claim a tax refund?
HMRC usually sends overpaid PAYE tax back automatically after the tax year. For job expenses or a refund mid-year, use your HMRC online account. Avoid refund firms that take a cut.
Can HMRC take money from my bank for tax debt?
In limited cases HMRC can recover debts over £1,000 directly, but it must leave you at least £5,000. Setting up Time to Pay stops this.
Does tax debt show on my credit file?
Not directly, but a County Court Judgment for unpaid tax does, for six years. Deal with HMRC letters early.
Will Universal Credit be cut if I earn more?
It reduces by 55p for each £1 you earn over your work allowance, so working more always leaves you better off.
